Time for another honest review, this time a supplement you’ve probably never heard of – Shilajit!
For most of us in the Western world we won’t be aware of this black goo, Eastern cultures however have been using its healing & rejuvenating properties for 1000’s of years.
So long ago was the discovery of this wonder substance, only stories passed down from generation to generation provide some idea of how it was discovered.
My favourite is the one of monks in the mountains watching monkeys pick this black tar substance then eat it, when the monks tried it, they noticed feeling stronger and more virile (perhaps not the best thing if you’re a monk in the mountains) 🙂
Another story speaks of wounded animals placing the black tar on injuries, when human soldiers did the same, they noticed how much faster their cuts would heal.
Great stories, however, for me, I really took notice when I heard Bruce Lee consumed Shilajit!
The initial Shilajit struggle.
So there are a few things you need to know before you start taking Shilajit.
And by several I mean, there is really only one!
The taste,
Please don’t let this put you off, because the benefits will far outweigh your initial reaction.
But eating Shilajit is like rimming the Michelin man.
Yep, it’s akin to licking burnt rubber.
Let’s say it’s an acquired taste 🙂
But once you get over that, believe it or not……….
Your body starts to crave it, and I don’t think it is the taste it craves, more the body realising the benefits.
So with that in mind let’s delve a little deeper.
How is Shilajit formed?
In truth, no one really knows how shilajit is formed!
There are several theories from prehestoric dead fish decomposed, to dead medicinal plants, or medicinal plants and soil combined, some believe it may even be honey that has mixed with the soil.
The truth is, no conclusive answer has been given, though at some point it forms with the fulvic and humic components of the soil,
The benefits of Shilajit
The two main ingredients in Shilajit that make it such a powerful supplement are Fulvic acid and Humic acid.

Here are 8 benefits of humic acid
- Oxygenates blood
- Mineral Transfer

- Detoxifying Properties
Where does Shilajit come from?
What we do know is the conditions needed for Shilajit to form, are found in a few places on earth, at high altitudes within mountain regions, the two most famous are Altai Region and Himalayas.
It is believed Shilajit takes 40 years to form into the supplement with healing properties that has the potential to restore the human body to ideal health*
Shilajit can also be found in Nepal, Pakistan, Mongolia, Bhutan, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, and Australia, North and South America.
Shalijit, my experience.
So now to my experience.
From time to time I stumble across supplements, like this one, and spend far too long reading, researching and watching what ever videos I can on both the benefits, and if there are any risks (usually in the form of taking too much).
Once I have researched the shit out of it, I then ditch all other supplements.
The reason, quite simple, by eliminating all other supplements, if I feel any different, it is more likely from the supplement I am taking at that time.
Of course there is always an element of whether some of the felt benefits are courtesy of a placebo effect, the mind really does effect the physical.
For this experiment I had enough to take for 1 month.
In truth it was just under 30 days, as I gave a few friends a pea sized amount (just to see their reaction)
So what if anything did I notice?
There was no instant hit, no instant feeling of, wow, this stuff is amazing!
And honestly, sometimes the taste is so random, I would often wonder if it was actually the real thing or some filler for the M4!
but a couple of weeks in and I started to feel less tired!
I definitely felt like I had extra energy.
Yes, my diet was good.
Yes I was sleeping better
And yes my training for the most, was on point.
But for me the fact my body craved, and I mean “craved” this crazy tasting black goo, was a good indication it was feeling some benefit!
I definitely felt more vibrant, it was a good sign this stuff was doing something!
Convenient tablets
Since experiencing Shilajit in the black goo pot, I have these super convenient tablets, each one contains 200mg of Shilajit in a simple portable packet, its not as much fun as seeing the tar like substance, but its less messy and you know precisely how much you are getting!
Finally, you only have to search “the benefits of Shilajit” and you can understand why I was feeling the way I did.
Some of those benefits include:
1. Boosts haemoglobin and iron levels – dosage of 500 mg/kg have anti-anemic activity, improve haemoglobin levels and red blood count.
2. Improves Stamina -Shilajit is considered a rasayana or rejuvenating remedy in ayurveda and siddha medicine, helping revitalize the body, reduce ailments, and improve your quality of life
3. Improves Testosterone and fertility in men – with the massive reduction in sperm count thanks to toxins in our food, water and air, now more than ever men need help to boost that amazing hormone Testosterone.
This statement alone should make any man over 30 want to jump on the Shilajit train.
one study revealed, taking a 250 mg dose of the ayurvedic remedy twice a day for 90 days helped significantly increase levels of total testosterone as well as free testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone, a hormone that’s a precursor to testosterone, in healthy volunteers.1
In another study on infertile male patients with total sperm count of under 20 million/ml of semen (oligospermia), taking 100 mg capsules of processed shilajit twice a day helped raise the total sperm count and testosterone levels.10
Shilajit is also considered an aphrodisiac for men, with animal studies confirming its ability to boost sexual drive and performance.
4. Fights Microbial Infections
Shilajit hastens wound healing and can help heal gastric ulcers quicker. thanks to its anti-inflammatory action and ability to counter oxidative damage.
The antiviral properties of Shilajit, courtesy its component humic acid, might make it a possible remedy for some common viral infections (hey who doesn’t need that nowadays 😉 😉
An in-vitro test found that it worked against the herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 and 2, as well as the human cytomegalovirus 32 (HCMV) and the human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Other research has noted its effectiveness against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria as well as Candida albicans fungi.
Together, these pathogens are responsible for many digestive, skin, and respiratory infections that we constantly grapple with.
Shailajit is an amazing supplement and the above are just some of the benefits of taking the black goo.
A few others to note are:
- Offers relief from pain
- Help fight stress
- Boosts Function Of The Urinary System
- Helps Protect The Heart
- Helps Manage Diabetes
- Fights Addiction-Related Withdrawal
- May Help Ward Off Alzheimer’s
So there you have, this secret supplement for me is a no brainer.
